Videogame market

Data from the Statista Digital Market Outlook shows that video games are a hugely popular and profitable industry worldwide, with global revenues forecast to exceed $156 billion by 2021. Of the six largest global video game markets, four are Asian countries, with China leading the way, where the gaming industry is forecast to turn over just under $50 billion this year and more than $70 billion by 2025. This week the Chinese government banned the use of video games by children under 18 on weekdays and limited it to a maximum of three hours on weekends.

In the United States, the world's second largest market, the video game economy is valued at some US$30 billion, 60% of the income generated by this segment in China. Mexico, meanwhile, is the tenth largest market worldwide and the largest in Latin America, with revenues estimated at US$2.3 billion in 2021.

Worldwide, games for mobile devices already generate the largest share of revenues, around 70%. This percentage is even higher in China, with 84%, or in some Latin American countries. For example, for every $100 generated by video games in Argentina, around $74 is billed through smartphones and tablets. This proportion stands at around 73% in Mexico, but is lower than the global average in Colombia and Brazil, where it is around 58%.
